During the recent MachineCon 2026 meeting, Caroline Chung, MD, MSc, FRCPC, CIP, received an AI150 award in the category of AI for Healthcare Impact. The AI150 Awards recognize individuals and organizations for outstanding achievements in AI across a range of industries.  

MachineCon brings together leading U.S. experts in AI and data to discuss innovative AI and analytics technologies and solutions shaping the future of multiple industries.  

Dr. Chung is Vice President, Chief Data & Analytics Officer, and Co-Director of the Institute for Data Science in Oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. She is also a tenured professor in radiation oncology and diagnostic imaging.  

Dr. Chung leads MD Anderson’s enterprise-wide strategy for data, analytics, and AI, overseeing data governance, model validation, and the responsible integration of AI into cancer care. Her research focuses on quantitative and computational imaging, using imaging data and modeling to detect and characterize tumors and treatment-related toxicities to support personalized treatment for patients with cancer. She also leads MD Anderson’s Tumor Measurement Initiative, which aims to standardize tumor assessment, and has advocated for imaging to evolve from a qualitative tool into a quantitative measurement platform. 

Under Dr. Chung’s leadership, MD Anderson has deployed AI across a range of practical applications, including ambient scribe tools, predictive analytics to identify patients at risk of falls, natural language processing to match patients with clinical trials, deep learning to extend radiation therapy expertise to underserved countries, and algorithms to improve surgical scheduling. 

Beyond her institution, Dr. Chung is an internationally recognized expert in oncology AI, responsible AI governance, quantitative imaging, and computational medicine. She serves as co-champion of ASCO’s AI Community of Practice, co-chairs the Quantitative Imaging for Assessment of Response in Oncology committee of the International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements, and is co-president of the Quantitative Medical Imaging Coalition. She has also contributed to national AI policy through the NIH Advisory Committee to the Director’s Working Group on AI and the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s committee on Digital Twins. 

Earlier this year, she also received the AI in Oncology Yvonne Award from ZS in May and was named a Reuters Trailblazing Woman of 2026 in Enterprise AI in March.

In a LinkedIn post announcing the AI150 award, Dr. Chung noted that although the honor was presented to her individually, she viewed it as a recognition shared with colleagues across MD Anderson, ASCO’s AI Community of Practice, the AACR Data Science Task Force, and the National Cancer Institute.
